In 1971 when I was a member at Northern Obedience Dog Club I saw my first Weimaraner. I fell in love with it instantly but when I returned home to tell my husband about this gorgeous breed of dog I had seen, I couldn't remember what it was called. I said somethig that sounded like "Wine".
In 1972 I was fortunate enough to be able to purchase a 10 month old Wei called Baunduv Miccah and I started to show him. Having been brought up in a showing household as a child it didn't take long to slip back into the showing mode. I soon had a Champion. My first bitch was a result of a mother-son breeding and produced an outstanding bitch Baunduv Zelda, who was a champion at 9 months of age. She put Weimaraners in the winner's circle in this state.
Grauhund Kennels has been fortunate to have bred quality stock for many years and to date have bred 43 Weimaraner Champions ( 4 of which are New Zealand Champions) and 4 Irish Setters Champions. We do not breed constantly but are very selective with the bitches we breed. Most puppies of our planned litters are ordered in advance.
Over the years we have bred Multiple Best in Show winning stock establishing this kennel as one of the best in the country. Our success at Royal Shows, Australia wide, not only at breed level but Best in Group, Runner-Up to Best in Group and Best in Show wins have been greater than any other kennel to date.
We are proud of this record.
We continued with our breeding program by introducing an English dog who was more than half American - Ch. Gunalt Clowning Around at Grauhund who has given us some wonderful breeding qualities. This dog has excellent bone, a beautiful head, very sound and has an excellent temperament; all of which he is passing on to his progeny.
In 1999 I was fortunate enough to have a trip to the US to select a male puppy whose tightly bred bloodlines were selected for his genotype. This dog Am./ Aust. Gr. Ch Colsidex Grauhund Just Jeans was bred by one of the most respected breeders in the USA and is the combination of some of the greatest dogs in the history of the breed in the USA. His lines include Amer. Ch. Colsidex Standing Ovation and his son Amer.Ch. Colsidex Nani Reprint and Amer. Ch. Nanis Southern Cross to name but a few. Levi is producing very typey puppies with wonderful temperament and all of his current stock in the ring are multiple In-Group winners.
In 2005 I was asked to judge a Weimaraner Specialty in Ohio and several shows and had the opportunity of viewing a dog from the Nani's kennel. This dog was going to be suitable to combine with Levi's progeny and would add to the gene pool in Australia. Amer. Ch. Nani's Sovereign Cross Check JH arrived in January 2006 and settled in to his new home with ease. This dog is a moderate dog, very clean in outline and very sound. He has the most wonderful easy temperment which he is passing on to his progeny.
Grauhund Kennels is currently breeding with quality bitches and producing puppies of a very high standard. Our long term plans include some interesting combinations to continue the pursuit of our ultimate passion, the maintenance and development of a quality Weimaraner breed.
Continue on our journey, the years to come..............
